DIY Laundry Detergent

Updated: Nov 27, 2019

Hello, friends! Thank you for stumbling into my corner of the internet today! I wanted to teach you how to make your own laundry detergent. Now, I'm not the most crunchy mom... I would probably describe me more as a scrunchy mom. I love that I know what goes into what washes our clothes, but the most important part of this project was to save money. It cleans well and costs very little. We are good with not smelling like laundry during the day, but if you are someone who does, feel free to add in some Downy Unstoppables or another scent bead option.

Let's get started, shall we?

These are the things you will need!

+ 2 bars of castile soap. I used Dr. Bronner's lavender, (like this) but you can use whichever scent you like.

+ 4 cups of Borax

+ 4 cups of Super Washing Soda

+ 1/2 cup of Baking Soda

+10-20 drops of preferred essential oil. I really like the brand Eden's Garden, and I also used lavender here*

*Optional.

So to start, you will want to cut up your soap into tiny squares. I don't know why, but all I could think about was cheese while I was cutting it.

Once you cut it into tiny cubes you can add it to a food processor to grind it up even more.

When you finish it will slightly resemble tiny feta cheese crumbles. (I can't stop with the cheese references.)

Once you have your feta soap, you can mix all of the remaining ingredients in a large bowl, or mix it in the container you will be storing it in like I did.

Once it's mixed, you're ready to go! Use 1-3 tablespoons depending on your load size.

I hope this is helpful to you! Please let me know if you try it! Now that I've started, I can't go back. It's so cheap and easy, and cleans very well in my opinion.

Thank you so much for reading!

Let's be friends!

Amber
